The House passed its VAWA reauth bill in April and actually *expanded* protections for Native American women. Badly needed protections. 157 Republicans voted against it. Because the NRA didn't like a gun provision in it. https://t.co/lG6tKH76is

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:09pm
The Violence Against Women Act has provisions that help tribes crack down on non-Native violent offenders on tribal land. This is a huge problem. Of course, Republicans tried to gut those protections in March. As in, repeal current law to take protections away from Native women.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:08pm
These *should* be the easiest bills Congress passes all year. “I know from working with my tribal communities … that human trafficking is occurring,” Sen. Cortez Masto told HuffPost in Feb. “We need to play catch up on this.” https://t.co/Sclz8vqlXf

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:07pm
Another bill that would help address this: The Not Invisible Act. It would refocus federal agencies on why Native women are disappearing, where they're going, how to collect data + how to make sure law enf is trained to ID sex trafficking. https://t.co/Sclz8vqlXf

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:06pm
That was August 2017. Today, Savanna's baby is living with her dad and Savanna's story is part of these horrific statistics on violence directed at Native women.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:05pm
Savanna's Act is named for Savanna LaFontaine-Greywind, a Native woman who lived in ND. She was 22 years old and 8 months pregnant. Then she disappeared. A neighbor later confessed to killing her, cutting the baby out of her womb and dumping her body into a river.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:05pm
The good news is there are bills in Congress to specifically address missing and murdered indigenous women. One is Savanna's Act. It would boost data collection + coordination at all levels of law enforcement - tribal, local, state, fed - in these cases. https://t.co/HfEtctw9CT

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:03pm
This is happening amid a broader pattern of violence targeted at Native women that doesn't get near enough media attention. 84% of Native women endure violence in their lifetime. In some tribal communities, Native women are murdered at TEN times the national average.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:02pm
Why don't people know what is going on with these missing and murdered indigenous women? Because of the limited or complete lack of data being collected by law enforcement agencies all over the country.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:01pm
Former Sen. Heidi Heitkamp could anecdotally give a sense of how severe the crisis is in her state. She said almost everyone in Indian Country in North Dakota -- roughly 30,000 people -- personally knows someone who has gone missing or been murdered.

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 3:00pm
Why would 100s of Native women and girls go missing? Where are they going? How severe is this situation? Even Sen. Lisa Murkowski, the lead sponsor of a bill to do something about this, can only speculate because there's just no data. https://t.co/HfEtctw9CT

Jennifer Bendery
16 hours ago:   Wednesday Jun 19 - 2:59pm
Imagine if 100s of women in your community were simply disappearing or being murdered. And nobody really knew what was going on. This is actually happening to Native American women. It's a largely invisible crisis, but the Senate is finally holding a hearing on it today. #MMIW
