@MeetThePress @NBCNews A small group of White House officials were tasked with looking into the matter but it didn’t go very far. On Feb 9 it became public in the Washington Post that Flynn did discuss sanctions with the Russian ambassador, and he that he now can’t be sure if that topic came up. 2/3

@MeetThePress @NBCNews Ok - Flynn’s FBI interview was Jan 24, 2017. Sally Yates, the acting attorney general, met w WH counsel Don McGahn two days later to tell him Flynn was interviewed by the FBI, lied to Pence and could be blackmailed by the Russians. 1/3

@MeetThePress @NBCNews Sure. Flynn seemed to know rather quickly because just hours after his FBI interview, that night in the WH w most officials gone, Flynn was seen in the national security adviser’s suite standing over his assistant, looking at the names of attorneys on the internet. 1/2

@MeetThePress @NBCNews It didn’t get better in the White House, where Flynn's contacts with Russia’s ambassador continued to hang over the early days of Trump’s time in office. Then he was interviewed by the FBI, and a few weeks later it became public he’d lied to Vice President Pence. 3/3

But then Trump lost re-election, so time was running out. “That was the motivation,” a WH official told me when I asked why pardon him now... 2/3

@MeetThePress @NBCNews A Flynn pardon was in the works for months. Aides were prepared for an announcement over the summer. But Flynn’s lawyer said she told Trump not to pardon Flynn. Flynn asked to withdraw his guilty plea and had said he wanted to clear his name. A pardon doesn’t achieve that... 1/3
