The GOP agenda - criminalize abortion, ban gun control, deregulate business, and pollute more - is super unpopular. So Republicans stopped trying to enact it in law and instead nominated politicians to the bench to get their agenda enacted by the unelected, unaccountable branch.

Our first job is to educate the public about this anti-democratic power grab and how radical the Court’s political agenda is. Then we need to focus on the elections. And win enough seats to be in a position to save democracy from these politicians disguised as justices.

Overturning Roe, rewriting both the First and Second Amendments, and strangling government’s ability to combat climate change, all in one week, is basically the Court saying to Congress, “Get out of the way, we are in charge of the country now”. Just a stunning turn of events.

8/ Of course no one can be sure that this tragedy would have been prevented by our bill. But it’s not true to say that nothing in this bill could have prevented Uvalde. In fact, there are many ways that the law could have stopped this massacre before it happened.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
7/ Finally, our bill invests $15 billion in mental health and school safety. Maybe a new local health center could have served Ramos in his time of need. Maybe his school would have been able to afford counselors who could have identified his warning signs.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
6/ Texas doesn’t have a red flag law, but our bill provides money to help states adopt them. If Texas had a red flag law, Ramos would have been a prime candidate to have his firearms taken away. And that mandated call to local police could have set that process in motion.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
5/ Or maybe the wait would have allowed his moment of crisis to pass. Or maybe if the gun store had told Ramos that as a condition of buying these guns, a call was going to be made to the local police department, it might have scared him straight.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
4/ They would have had time to intervene bc the new law creates a de facto waiting period, of anywhere from 3-10 days, before an 18-20 yr old can buy a gun. Also, the waiting period could have prevented Ramos from getting the guns at all before the last day of school.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
3/ The police likely knew Ramos was dangerous. That call would have given them key information that a kid in crisis was rushing out to buy guns the minute he turned 18. The police could have taken steps to intervene.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
2/ Most importantly, the bill requires that no gun can be sold to an 18 year old without a call being placed by the FBI to the local police to check on the status of the buyer. Reporting suggests Ramos was known to the local police - they had been to his house multiple times.

Chris Murphy
1 day ago:   Wednesday Jun 29 - 4:52pm
I’ve read a few articles on the gun safety bill that suggest there isn’t anything in it that could have prevented the Uvalde shooting. That’s wrong. Of course we can’t know for certain, but there are several provisions that could have stopped that massacre. 1/ Let me explain:
